Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Las Vegas NV

.KEY MESSAGES...

* Gusty winds and cooler temperatures will spread across the region
  beginning Tuesday.

* Light showers are expected across the southern Great Basin
midweek as a low pressure system sits over central Nevada.

&&

.DISCUSSION...through next weekend.

A weak low over southern Arizona is sparking off scattered showers
and thunderstorms across the mountainous terrain of northern
Arizona. Some of those showers continue to wrap westward into
eastern Mohave county where brief light rain and gusty winds can
be expected through early this evening. Activity will die off
quickly by sunset as the low moves eastward and nocturnal
stability increases.

A much stronger low will drop southward out of the Pacific
Northwest tomorrow, settling into the Lake Tahoe area by Tuesday
evening. This approaching low will result in height falls through
the day and increasingly gusty southerly winds across much of the
region. High NBM and HREF probabilities for winds greater than 40
mph are fairly vast through early Wednesday morning, particularly
for across southern Nevada and eastern California. In addition,
the ECMWF EFI tool which highlights especially anomalous wind
forecasts compared to seasonal climatology is suggesting very
windy conditions across these same areas. Went ahead and expanded
the wind advisories to cover much of the above mentioned areas and
nudged forward the start time to 17z. Strong winds will result in
weather impacts related to blowing dust, strong crosswinds, and
dangerous boating conditions in the area.

Sharply cooler weather will follow Wednesday and Thursday as the
low remains parked across the CA/NV region. Below normal
temperatures are expected both days with scattered shower and
thunderstorm activity expected across the southern Great Basin and
Sierra/Owens Valley.

Improving conditions are expected over the weekend as the low
weakens allowing temperatures to climb and dry conditions to
resume areawide.

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 06Z Forecast
Package...Southwesterly winds with speeds of around 10 knots and
gusts near 20 knots continue through tonight. Winds start to ramp
up after sunrise with gusts of around 25 knots before a push of
stronger southwesterly winds arrive by late morning with gusts in
excess of 30 knots. These winds should start to back off late
Tuesday night. FEW to SCT mid and high clouds pass through the
area with bases as low as 12 kft.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...For the 06Z Forecast Package...Expect an increase in
southwesterly winds areawide early tomorrow morning, intensifying
further in the late morning and afternoon. Peak gusts should be in
the 30 to 35 knot range in the Las Vegas Valley and Colorado River
Valley during the afternoon, decreasing to between 20 and 25 knots
on Tuesday night. Strong westerly winds persist at KDAG through most
of the TAF period, increasing to 35 to 40 knots in the afternoon. At
KBIH, downslope winds start to increase out of the west in the early
afternoon with gusts to around 30 knots, then intensify to between
35 and 40 knots out of the northwest to north in the late afternoon
and evening. FEW to SCT mid and high clouds pass through the area
with bases as low as 12 kft.
